Get to know our team! We are South Africans and Americans with a broad range of backgrounds:
Yuniya steers the project toward its vision. She selects the individuals to be featured in our video series, and provides oversight and direction with regard to our content. She also leads fundraising and partnership-building initiatives, and makes sure the project keeps to its administrative and evaluation goals. Yuniya holds a Masters degree in Public Administration from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, in California.
Yuniya is originally from Guyana (South America), but calls Brooklyn, New York, home.
Obakeng coordinates and oversees the production of our videos. In addition to developing the creative approach to each video, he handles all the camera work and post production tasks.Obakeng completed film training from the T3 Institute, a highly respected film education institute sponsored by the Commercial Producer Association of South Africa. He is also a member of the Gauteng Film Commission.
Obakeng is from Bloemfontein, in the province of Free State, South Africa.
Nkuli handles the administrative and logistical needs of our project, including financial tracking, procurement, transportation, and general office management. She is an accomplished office and operations manager with nearly 15 years of administrative experience under her belt. She holds a diploma in Business Skills from Damelin Business College, and is studying toward a Chartered Secretaries international qualification.
Nkuli is from the township of Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Wendy researches and pens the articles for our journalistic series, focusing on issues related to Black leadership and entrepreneurship in the South African context. She attended and completed her BA in Media Studies at the University of Limpopo, where she was awarded Most Promising Student in Media Studies. Wendy is a recent graduate from the Honors Program in Journalism and Media Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in Johannesburg. She is also a Fellow in the Duke University Menell Media Exchange, Student Newsroom.
Wendy is from the province of Limpopo, South Africa.
ALLISON KHAN TEIXEIRA
Chief Operating Officer (US)
Allison holds down the fort for us in the US, handling operational and financial matters, and helping to build partnerships with US-based businesses and donors. She is a seasoned and highly skilled events planner and lifestyle designer, having owned and operated two full-service bridal shops for more than 15 years. A former member of The Rotary Club of Maplewood and receiver of the highest award – Service Above Self – Allison continues to contribute to civic events and nonprofit organizations such as Inroads Corporation and The Leaguers. She created the summer program “Girls Rule” for the Maplewood/ South Orange School Board for their summer camp program, which enhanced the personal lives of grade 6-9 girls – instructing them on everyday etiquette and dining skills.
Allison resides in South Orange, New Jersey in the United States.
